Paragliding In Crete
Eftikis is your paragliding mountain guide in Western Crete. I have personally known him for many years, more than we both care to remember. For paragliding in Crete, his knowledge and experience in the best flying locations is second to none. He knows just where to be and the time you need to be there.
You know how it is in the UK, the wind is always too strong or not strong enough, the wife or girlfriend is getting bored with sitting on the hill, the kids are cold, sound familiar? Well some locations in Crete boast over 300 flying days per year! Our local guides offer a great range of paragliding opportunities in Western Crete, from high mountain take offs to great ridge soars landing on the beach for a beer. You will need 5 hours flying experience at club pilot to take on our great opportunities.
Paragliding In Crete For School Groups
Unfortunately due to time restrictions this is not an activity we can offer to school groups on a multi-activity package.
Paragliding In Crete For Families And Adult Groups
We can offer tandem flights on either the traditional paraglider or the a flight on the exciting paramotor. Flights are very subject to wind conditions so good forward planning of your chosen activities in Crete will be required. For paraglider pilots requiring site guiding and coaching these are the site locations available to you. As highlighted previously you will need at least 5 hours flying experience at club pilot level.
The prevailing wind in Crete is NNW so the nearest flying site to our village is Varipetro about a 20 minute drive away. This is a high take off with some spectacular views over Hania and Western Crete and out to the Mediterranean. However the wind often moves further west offering a great ridge soar opportunity at Falassarna which is about a 50 minute drive away. The bonus here is, that just below the ridge is the beach, so any spectators in your group can sunbathe while you fly. Even better there is a paraglider friendly bar on the beach for a nice cold beer when you land. This is one of my favourite flying locations and the favourite haunt of the Hania flying club on Sundays. See other locations below.
Location 1: Falassarna
About 50 minutes by bus from Kalyves to reach the take off. This location is not predominantly a thermal site, it is dynamic. However, that said there are usually some of thermals just forward of the ridge or to the right by some small cliffs. This location needs a southwest to west northwest wind for the best flying conditions. Some tight landings in olive groves if you can’t make the beach. You need about 5 hours flying time for this location.
Location 2: Varipetro
About 40 minutes to drive to Varipetro. The site needs a north northwest wind direction for ideal conditions. This is a thermal flight from a high take off overlooking Hania with the Mediterranean in the distance. Near by there is an ancient temple that you can fly over and some good lift over undulating terrain. About 5 – 6 hours flying time but other than that no special skills required for this location.
Location 3: Fragokastelo
About 1 hour 30 minutes drive to Fragokastelo from Kalyves. It’s both thermal and dynamic flight in this location. We need a southeast to southwest wind direction for this location. There is a great beach close by of spectators. This site is for medium to experienced pilots, 5 – 7 hours flying time.
Location 4: Avdu
About 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Avdu. We need east northeast north northwest west wind direction for this location and it is a thermal flight. Avdu boasts the most flying days in Crete. This location is for medium to experienced pilots, so 5 – 7 hours flying time.
Location 5: Gramvousa
About 50 minutes to get to Gramvousa from Kalyves by car. This location takes an east northeast wind direction. Here it is dynamic flight. The location is for medium to experienced pilots, so over 5 hours flying time.
Location 6: Paliochora
About 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Palaiochora from Kalyves by car. This location takes from a southeast to southwest wind direction. The flying here is dynamic with the odd chance of a thermal. Landing is on the beach, so this is also a great location for spectators to do some sun bathing while you are flying!!! You need about 5 hours flying time for this location.
