Crete Adventures: Eating Out In Crete
The Greek cuisine is famous for its beautiful fresh dishes, both meat and vegetable. The taverna’s and caffenion’s we only show on this page where we have visited personally and we have always had good food and a friendly service. If you are out and about in Western Crete we thoroughly recommend you try these taverna’s.
O Yalos Taverna: Kalyves
This is where all our catering is provided for our full catering activity breaks. It is a family run taverna with everyone lending a hand. Niko and Kikki are the owners and have run this beach front taverna for many years. We have known Niko and Kikki for so long we try to forget because it makes us feel so old! A great selection of traditional and European dishes cooked to order. You can be guaranteed a warm welcome here.
Marouvas Taverna: Vamos
A friendly taverna with a nice selection of traditional food. The Toutsousakia is very nice; it is a type of meat ball in a herby sauce. Not so Greek, but the Carbonara is also fantastic.
Flisvos Taverna: Fragocastello
If you travel to the south side of the island a visit to Flisvos is a must. Great traditional food, and as always freshly cooked. The house speciality is Sfakiano, which is lamb slowly cooked in olive oil and herbs. Accommodation is also available for an overnight stop, great sunsets from here. Good paragliding from here when the wind is south. Ask to speak to Spiros.
“Katie’s” Caffenion Kalami
Just on the outside of Kalyves this cafenion is a nice place to go for a drink in the evenings. Great view of Souda Bay and the Akriteria. Yanis the owner is a great guy with a good sense of humour. He serves traditional Raki, Ouzo, Beers and a nice house wine, and of course a selection of coffee. Alcoholic drinks are always served with a free small meze or you can ask for a table meze which has a greater selection of nibbles and cost a couple of Euros.
O Zaharias Taverna: Platanos
If you travel to the West coast near Falasarna usually for paragliding you must try O Zaharias. You can be sure of a warm welcome from Fotis. This taverna has a fantastic selection of traditional food prepared every day by the family. All the food is organically grown or reared locally. You can be sure of a great meal here, the only difficulty is knowing when to stop eating! My favourite is chicken with lemon sause. Fotis once asked me to choose whose was best, his mothers or his, what do you say!
Sun Set Taverna: Falasarna
Another great stop off when you are paragliding from the west facing ridge. You will find fresh salads and grilled meat. A selection of about six or seven traditional dishes are prepared every day. Get there early because once they are gone that’s it for the day. Also as the name of the taverna suggests, you get great sun sets from here.
Kalo Karthia: Vamos
A traditional caffenion in the main village street, it is a friendly family run caffenion. A great place to sit and watch the world go by. There’s lots of comings and goings by the local villagers. A good selection of Beers, Spirits and Wine all served with a free meze. Traditional coffee and espresso’s also available. You can also get a small selection of cooked snacks here, potato omelette is one to try.
