Crete Adventures: Accommodation And Eating Out

Eating Out & Entertainment In Crete

Eating Out & Entertainment In Crete

For your Crete adventures, accommodation and eating out are probably almost as important as the activities themselves! To this end we have spent many years trying out different accommodation and places to eat out, so we are confident that we are recommending the right places. The Cretan cuisine is famous for its beautiful fresh dishes, both meat and vegetable. Even the people of mainland Greece are envious of the amazing cuisine that you find in Crete. The accommodation, Taverna’s and Kafenion’s that we show on this page are places that we have stayed in or eaten at personally. We have always had good food and a friendly service so this is why we have included them on this page. The accommodation all have self catering facilities as standard, but obviously we provide full board, half board and B&B, which ever is your preference, it’s just useful to have a kitchen to make a cup of tea or a midnight snack!

Porto Kalyves Complex:

The Porto Kalyves Complex is a group of 3 accommodation apartment blocks that are side by side. They overlook the bay of Souda and have a small private beach just across the Road. All the apartments have self catering facilities and sleep 3 – 4, across the three apartment blocks we can cater for 120 guests so we generally use this accommodation for our bigger groups.

If you choose an all inclusive package our meals are provided a family taverna that is about a 5 minute walk along the sea front. We have known the family for over 30 years, so we are sure that you will get the best deal and the best food. Close to the accommodation there is a bakery, mini market and general supplies kiosk.

Flisvos Taverna: Fragocastello

If you travel to the south side of the island a visit to Flisvos is a must. Great traditional food, and as always freshly cooked. The house speciality is Sfakiano, which is lamb slowly cooked in olive oil and herbs. Accommodation is also available for an overnight stop, great sunsets from here. Good paragliding from here when the wind is south. Ask to speak to Spiros.

“Katies Kafenion” Kalami

Just on the outside of Kalyves this kafenion is a nice place to go for a drink in the evenings. Great view of Souda Bay and the Acroteria. Gianis will serve you, he speaks fluent English and is a great guy with a good sense of humour. He serves traditional Raki, Ouzo, Beers and a nice house wine, and of course a selection of coffee. Alcoholic drinks are always served with a free small meze or you can ask for a table meze which has a greater selection of nibbles and cost a couple of Euros.

O Zaharias Taverna: Platanos

O Zaharias

O Zaharias

On the far Western coast of Crete you will find Falasarna. We travel here usually for our sunset camp and kayaking, while you are there we recommend that you try O Zaharias. You can be sure of a warm welcome from Fotis. This taverna has a fantastic selection of traditional food prepared every day by the family. All the food is organically grown or reared locally. You can be sure of a great meal here, the only difficulty is knowing when to stop eating! My favourite is chicken with lemon sauce. Fotis once asked me to choose whose was best, his mothers or his, what do you say!
